The first commercial vessel called at Gemalink port on JAX service on the route connecting Asia with US. This super ship of CMA CGM has a tonnage of 165,375 DWT, length 365.5 m and total handling volume nearly 8,500 TEUs.
Sharing at this important event, Gemalink’s Board of Director said: “With the positive prospects from the market such as FTAs and global supply chain shifting trend, Gemalink hopes to become an important driving force contributing to the economic growth of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in particular and the whole country in general, promoting the key role in promoting the development of Logistics Centers, satellite ICD networks, warehouses, industrial complexes and ancillary services,… ”.
In fact, with an average growth rate of 20% / year in the Cai Mep port cluster and the trend of upsizing ship constantly to reduce operating costs, the congestion at ports capable of receiving large ships in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area becomes more seriously.
Therefore, Gemalink being put into operation at the right time will help to solve this difficult problem, meet the high demands of shipping lines and import - export customers, improve competitiveness and optimize logistics costs for Vietnamese goods to worldwide markets.
Gemalink officially started the construction in February 2019, is one of the top 19 International ports capable of accommodating the largest vessel up to 200,000 DWT.
The capacity in phase 1 is 1.5 million TEU / year and the whole project is 2.4 million TEU / year. In phase 1, Gemalink operates 800 m of main berth, that can accommodate 2 mother ships at the same time and 230 m berth for feeders and barges, on an area of 33 hectares. Gemalink focuses on investing in modern equipment and technology, as 6 STS cranes and 18 E-RTG cranes.
Total investment capital for phase 1 is 330 million USD. The Port was invested by the two leading corporations in shipping and port operation - Gemadept (75%) and CMA-CGM (25%).
Gemalink locates in the downstream area of Cai Mep river, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, has important and outstanding competitive advantages to become one of the world’s major transshipment hubs. It is a convenient location (at the river mouth with the deepest draft for proper turning basin); the total length of main berths of the full phase is 1,500 m, capable of receiving 3 mother ships at the same time.
Moreover, this is the only deep-water port in Cai Mep - Thi Vai area providing a dedicated berth exclusive for feeders and barges to link Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and countries in the region such as the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia,…
